Incarceration

  • Why the criminal system is not just.  From the article: “We convince judges and jurors that being objective is a choice, when numerous biases operate beyond our conscious awareness or control. We purport to execute only those who most deserve it, but walk down death row and you won’t see the worst of the worst. You’ll see people with ineffective lawyers; you’ll see a disproportionate number of people who just happen to have darker skin and thicker lips; you’ll see innocent people — one out of 25 by the best estimate. Our approach to criminal justice is failing us.”
  • Speaking of which, here are eight charts on what it’s like being black in the American criminal justice system.

Work

  • A study shows that working early in the day makes you look more productive and a better worker to your supervisor than if you work later in the day.  It doesn’t matter how many hours per week you work or how well you do at your job.

About shaunmiller

I have just completed a visiting position as an assistant professor at Dalhousie University. My ideas are not associated with my employer; they are expressions of my own thoughts and ideas. Some of them are just musings while others could be serious discussions that could turn into a bigger project. Besides philosophy, I enjoy martial arts (Kuk Sool Won), playing my violin, enjoying coffee around town, and experimenting with new food.
